“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” just dashed its way to the $400 million mark at the global box office.
The sequel to the hit adaptation has grossed over $190.6 million domestically and over $209.5 million internationally as of Tuesday, Deadline first reported.
The film is No. 8 worldwide, and it is likely to climb up since it has yet to hit the cinemas in Japan and Hong Kong.
The Jeff Fowler-directed movie was officially released on April 8. Its newest milestone makes it the highest-grossing domestic opening for a video game adaptation ever.
The top five markets outside the U.S. where it sold the most tickets are the U.K. ($34.4 million), Mexico ($22.1 million), France ($17.3 million), Australia ($16.6 million) and Brazil ($12 million).
Due to the sequel’s success, Paramount teased during its CineEurope presentation that a third installment would be happening since a threequel was already considered by the producers.
“Sonic 2” already beat the record set by the first film. It opened to a strong $71 million domestically, outpacing the three-day opening results of the 2020 original.
The first “Sonic” made $149 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $170.7 million in other countries, for a total of $319.7 million.
“With ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2,’ our filmmakers and producing partners delivered the high-quality theatrical experience that the whole family had been waiting for, and we are thrilled with the enthusiastic global response to the characters and world we have created out of the beloved Sonic IP,” Paramount Pictures president of worldwide marketing and distribution Marc Weinstock was quoted as saying by Collider.
Paramount Motion Picture Group co-president Daria Cercek noted that the latest milestone of the film demonstrated how the global audiences are “hungry for great family entertainment” amid the pandemic.
Cercek teased that they are expanding the “Sonic” franchise next, so fans should anticipate the next film installment and other related projects coming to Paramount+.
The “Sonic the Hedgehog” sequel featured the voices of Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Jim Carrey, Shemar Moore, Idris Elba and Colleen O'Shaughnessey.
