KEY POINTS

  • The Cavs are expected to be active in the coming weeks as they look for another guard to join the team
  • Unloading Rubio and Sexton is seen as the best option to give the Cavs some financial flexibility
  • John Wall poses to be a perfect fit for the Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been the surprise of the current NBA season, something pundits never saw coming.

Regardless, it remains that the Cavs need some backcourt help--with Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio ruled out for the rest of the 2021-22 season.

That was somehow addressed with the Rajon Rondo trade.

But along with Darius Garland, it remains that head coach J.B. Bickerstaff needs more bodies to help in the guard rotation.

With the NBA trade deadline happening in January, it hardly comes as a surprise that the Cavs would target several free-agent guards.

So far, only one name has cropped up in the person of Caris LeVert.

Shams Charania of The Athletic shared that the Cavs have their eyes on the 27-year-old player.

This stems from previous murmurs that the Indiana Pacers are putting LeVert as well as Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis on the trading block, hinting at a potential rebuild.

There are, of course, other names they can look into. But if the Cavs are bringing in a guard, there are at least two names that come to mind–Ben Simmons and John Wall.

Most know that Simmons and Wall carry hefty contracts. Given that fact, a plausible way to go about it is for the Cavs to include Rubio and Sexton in any deal.

To sweeten up things, adding future picks may also help.

Between Rubio and Sexton, the latter makes more sense to trade for.

Although he has been getting heavy criticism for hogging the ball, he is a young player who can score when healthy.

Sexton could be a key piece for the Pacers and Rockets. As for the Sixers, a deal is unlikely considering club president Daryl Morey wants a healthy player who can immediately make an impact as part of the team.

With that said, Wall looms as a sensible choice. The veteran has not seen action this season as Houston continues to find takers.

Sexton would be an ideal addition to Houston if the team is willing to wait as he fits the mix of young guns perfectly and could be back by next season for a better run.
