A major winter storm is forecasted to move in on the Midwest, East Coast and Southeast late Thursday into Friday. The Weather Channel named the sprawling storm "Izzy."

“A quick-moving winter storm will dive south into the Northern Plains tonight, continuing through the Upper Midwest and into the Mid-Mississippi Valley into Friday night. This winter storm will impact the Southeast and Northeast U.S. this weekend into early next. Heavy snow, freezing rain, ice, and strong winds will impact travel throughout these areas,” the National Weather Service said.

The winter storm is expected to affect a wide range of areas throughout the next few days. Places that do not receive much snow like Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas could expect to see some over the weekend.

It is unclear how severe the storms will be for specific areas.

The storm can move as high and east as Maine. Meteorologists forecast that parts of Iowa, Minnesota and the Dakotas could see up to 12 inches of snow.

"Although the track is far from certain, models do tell us that a major winter storm is on the way for some areas of the Southeast and up the East Coast," CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.

"Impossible snowy travel, significant ice storm power outages and wind gusts over 40 mph are all in play, and right now the track of the storm is key,” Myers said.
